Broadcast with Winamp and the SHOUTcast Source DSP

Send music from desktop Winamp to your Lusch Audio SHOUTcast stream. Work through the connection and audio checks below, then test what listeners actually hear.

Unsure which value belongs in a field? Host · Port · Source credentials · Bitrate · Stream ID.

Reviewed · Follow the instructions supplied with your own rental.

Before you start

This guide is for desktop Winamp on Windows with the SHOUTcast Source DSP plug-in. Have your Lusch Audio host, broadcast port, source password and required encoder settings ready. Keep your listening URL separate: your listeners use that address; the DSP uses the broadcasting details. Use any Stream ID or DJ login supplied for your rental, rather than guessing a default.

1. Install and enable the DSP

Use the SHOUTcast DSP page and Winamp desktop help to check installation requirements. Close Winamp before installing the compatible DSP into its installation folder, then reopen it.

Open Preferences → Plug-ins → DSP/Effect and select Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP. If it is missing, check the installation folder and version compatibility before troubleshooting your rental.

2. Enter the connection details

In the DSP’s Output tab, select the output you will use and open Login.

  • Server Address: your supplied host, without an http:// or https:// prefix.
  • Port: your supplied broadcast port.
  • Password: your source or DJ password, as instructed for your rental.
  • Stream ID / DJ or User ID: use them only as directed for your account.

Match the connection mode to your rental instructions. If the required mode or a credential field is unclear, ask TJ Lusch before trying combinations. A control-panel password or listening URL is not a substitute for source credentials.

3. Choose the encoder and audio input

In the output’s Encoder settings, choose MP3 and the bitrate and other encoding settings specified for your rental. Avoid copying another provider’s example settings.

In Input, choose Winamp for music played in Winamp, or Soundcard Input for a routed microphone or mixer signal. Check the input meters while your intended source is active.

4. Connect and check the listener stream

Load a familiar track, start playback and use Connect for the configured output. Read the DSP’s status and confirm that it is transmitting. Then ask a helper to open your supplied listening URL on a separate device.

Ask them to check clear music, expected volume and interruptions. Keep returned stream audio out of your broadcast mix. A connected status alone does not prove that listeners are receiving the intended sound.

Adding a microphone or mixer

Decide which signal should reach the DSP: Winamp playback, or audio from your mixer or recording input. Hearing a microphone through your headphones does not prove that it is included in the broadcast. Input and microphone controls vary with the DSP version and Windows audio setup.

Test music alone, voice alone, and then both together. Check the DSP meters each time and ask the helper to confirm both sources. If voice is missing, inspect the selected recording input and routing before raising every gain control. See the microphone and audio-routing guides for related checks.

Song titles and ending your show

For track information, check the DSP’s Titles settings and its option to follow Winamp title updates. Verify the title with a listener after changing tracks.

At the end of the show, use Disconnect and check that it stays disconnected. If it reconnects, inspect Auto Connect. Follow your rental’s handover instructions when returning to AutoDJ; do not assume every account switches automatically.

If something does not work

  • DSP missing: recheck the desktop player, compatible plug-in and installation folder.
  • Cannot connect: compare the exact host, port, source credentials and connection mode with your rental instructions. Record the complete status message.
  • Connected but silent: check playback, input selection, meters and the listener URL.
  • Distortion: reduce gain at the stage that clips, then make another listener test.
  • Echo: close or mute returned stream playback on the broadcasting computer and check for duplicated audio routes.

Send TJ Lusch your avatar name, Winamp and DSP versions, exact error, time and timezone, and checks already completed. Send connection settings privately in Second Life.
